The Pike County Sheriff’s Office has launched a program named “Project S.I.R.,” with S.I.R. standing for Swift Identification and Rescue. The purpose of this initiative is to give first responders notice that they are responding to a call where a special needs individual may be present and in danger.
Although the initial consideration for this program is for individuals living with developmental disabilities, other special needs individuals may wish to enroll, like those who are living with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, cerebral palsy, stroke survivors, wheelchair or bed bound, deaf, blind, mute or other debilitating medical conditions.
This process will begin with the family of a special needs individual submitting an enrollment form to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, which lists information helpful to emergency responders. Then, if a call comes in that is at an address associated with the special needs individual or simply with that individual listed as a victim, the communication officers will see notes in the CAD system that alert them of the special needs individual.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency crews will find a distinctive sticker on the front door of the residence or on a vehicle, if the scene is a traffic-related incident, that states there is a special needs individual inside who may be unable or unwilling to cooperate due to their condition. The CAD notes will be able to reflect the specific social or medical needs of the individual, as well as a recent photo so responders can see who they will be on the lookout for.
This enrollment form will be accessible to the citizens of Pike County who have a special needs family member, and it can be accessed digitally on the Pike County Sheriff’s Office website or as a paper document that can be picked up in person or mailed out to the home. There is no cost to enroll and participate in the program.
Once enrollment is complete, a deputy will contact the family to confirm the information. The family will also be given identification stickers to apply to the front door of the residence and primary transport vehicle, which emergency responders will look for upon arrival at the home.
